Inside Our Lab: Turning Wheat Straw Into Better Pellets

When people ask us what actually happens inside a non-plastic producing company, we usually point them to two places: the field, where wheat straw is left behind after harvest, and our lab, where that same straw slowly becomes something new. This week we want to take you into the second one.

Our team has been heads-down on the next generation of our wheat-straw pellet — the raw material that eventually becomes the straws and cutlery you find on a hospitality tray or a QSR counter. It is not glamorous work. It is grinding, blending, extruding, cooling, testing, adjusting, and doing it all again. But it is the work that decides whether a biobased product is going to feel like a compromise or feels like an upgrade.

Why the pellet is the whole game

Almost every conversation we have with buyers in European hospitality and food service eventually lands on the same three questions. Does it hold up in a hot or sparkling drink? Does it feel solid in the hand? And is it certified for food contact across the markets we operate in? The honest answer is that none of those questions are solved at the finished-product stage. They are solved in the pellet.

That is why so much of our R&D energy sits upstream. If we get the formulation right — the ratio of wheat-straw fibre to biopolymer, the moisture window during extrusion, the additive package that keeps things food-safe — everything downstream becomes easier. Straws stop going soft too early. Cutlery stops snapping at the handle. Certifications become a matter of paperwork instead of reformulation.

What we are working on right now

A few threads we are pulling on inside the lab this quarter:

  • Fibre pre-treatment. Wheat straw is not uniform. Different harvests, different regions, different moisture levels. We are testing pre-treatment steps that narrow that variability before the fibre ever touches the extruder.
  • Strength without stiffness. A straw that is too rigid cracks. One that is too soft collapses. We are dialling in the sweet spot where our pellet gives a straw that behaves the way a good paper straw wishes it did — but without the pulpy aftertaste.
  • Food-contact certification. We are aligning the formulation with the certification requirements our European customers actually ask for, so that when a hospitality group wants to roll out across ten countries, the answer is yes, not "let us check."

Why we are also on the road in Asia

None of this happens in a vacuum. In parallel with the lab work, our supply-chain team is spending real time on the ground with our partners in India, Indonesia, Thailand and China. Pellet R&D is one half of the equation; being able to scale a formulation reliably across a manufacturing partner is the other half.

What we are learning is that the two feed each other. A lab tweak that looks brilliant in our lab only matters if it survives the trip to a production line 9.000 kilometres away. So we iterate in both places at once — small changes, measured impact, and a lot of samples going back and forth.

Where this goes next

For the operators we work with — restaurants, catering groups, QSR chains, hotels — the story we want to be able to tell by the end of this cycle is simple. A PLQ drinking straw that lasts through a long drink. A knife that cuts a real meal. A fork that does not embarrass the plate it sits on. All of it biobased, all of it certified, all of it made from a feedstock that would otherwise be burned or ploughed back into the field.

We are not fully there yet. But we are closer than we were 12 months ago, and we like showing our work.
